"Lastly I just think they are largely a copycat business 1 with a free model and a heavy focus on UI design over UX design."

Readability, Instapaper, My Hypocrisy, and Trust — The Brooks Review. I prefer Instapaper over Readability in every way, save one: articles in Readability truly are more readable, thanks to those HF&J fonts and the Just Right margins and leading. Perhaps the copy machine can work in reverse just a bit, and I hope that Instapaper can become even better due to the existence of Readability.

"That’s a total of 23 links on that page, as it appears on a typical computer. Only one is a search result. That’s just wrong."

At Google, advertising is crowding out search results | Ed Bott. I’ve been quite happy with Duck Duck Go ever since switching on February 29.

"iPhones and iPads are the easiest systems to make accessible in the history of computing. iOS, moreover, is the funnest accessible development environment there ever was. You’ll have a whale of a time testing this shit out. VoiceOver, like an Oscar Pistorius prosthesis, is actually cool.

But if you can’t make it happen in the first place, you suck as a developer."

Hot new iPhone apps by irresponsible developers. Absolutely: if you explore new user interface paradigms on a new computing platform, but don’t first ensure that your experimental new user interface is fully accessible to users with any possible handicap, then you suck.

"When it comes to setting em dashes, some claim that they must always sit between thin spaces (U 2009). Of course, all hard and fast rules should be taken with a pinch of salt. And here’s why: not all em-dashes are equal. In most fonts the em-dash already incorporates a little extra space on either side (e.g. Helvetica & Georgia); others (e.g. FF Scala) have no space (no side-bearings); while others (e.g. Dante MT) are actually wider than their advanced width."

Costco Typography. Good point.

"Nagel concluded that democracies rarely or never elect the best leaders. Their advantage over dictatorships or other forms of government is merely that they “effectively prevent lower-than-average candidates from becoming leaders."

"My friend Scott Kellum, design director at Treesaver, has now sent me this refactored code for hiding text, which I hereby christen the Kellum Method."

Replacing the -9999px hack (new image replacement) – Jeffrey Zeldman. Wow, I can’t believe that our industry practiced widespread use of FIR for a decade before this obvious-in-retrospect trivial-but-important improvement was created. Bravo, Mr. Kellum.

Wow. Look at the clean simple design of that page. Look at the human-friendly URL. No registration required. Product keys shown right on the page next to the download link. The link is a regular old HTTP download of a regular old ISO image. They even post SHA1 hashes.

Look out, Apple: Microsoft got game.

Jaguar Leaps Forward this Leap Year - Brand New. Hey Jaguar, the 90’s called, and they want their logo and type treatment back. I mean, seriously? This is the sort of tasteless “modern refresh” that most luxury brands have been undoing lately.

"Following an analysis on the pedestrian accidents that have been reported over the past nine months, the committee was leaning toward a strategy that includes a focus on driver and pedestrian education."

While in the past many stores were able to sell pseudoephedrine, new laws in the United States have restricted sales to pharmacies, with the medicine kept behind the counter. The pharmacies require signatures and examination of government issued ID in order to purchase pseudoephedrine. Because the hours of availability of such pharmacies are often limited, it would be of great interest to have a simple synthesis of pseudoephedrine from reagents which can be more readily procured.

A quick search of several neighborhoods of the United States revealed that while pseudoephedrine is difficult to obtain, N-methylamphetamine can be procured at almost any time on short notice and in quantities sufficient for synthesis of useful amounts of the desired material.

A Simple and Convenient Synthesis of Pseudoephedrine From N-Methylamphetamine. LOL.
