Garamond’s ſt ligature. Ah ha! The “st” ligature has always bothered me, as it seems rather artificial—a forced piece of decorative fancy that is out of place in most serious typographical work. But if it has its origins in the long s, well then it finally makes a little sense to me—enough to justify at least its existence, if not its usage.
